Advanced Searching for articles

The advanced search facility has a significant number of options (simple, multiple, exact, limit and range searches) listed on its page for the advanced user. The main consideration when using any of them is to know that each single option can, if needed, be combined with any or all of the other options. The example criteria shown (results are displayed below) will be used to find
  • All articles whose title contains the text ‘church’, regardless of case or position
  • Only Sentinel articles will be included
  • The authors last name will contain ‘wood’

Another illustration would be to find all poems by “Rosemary Cobham” (say). Entering her name in the Author’s box, and choosing the category of Poetry, would give you a list of 98 of her poems.

The following notes relate to the advanced search options selected above;
  • All article titles include the word “church” (all capitalised in this particular instance)
  • No Journal articles were included
  • All authors include the word “wood” in their last name. Note that anyone whose first or middle name contained the text “wood” (eg Helen Wood Bauman) would be excluded from the list by the “last name” criteria
